*The team behind the new “Scary Movie” says the film’s controversial ending was designed to address a question fans have been asking for years: what happened to the franchise after the Wayans brothers stepped away?
Marlon Wayans said the filmmakers wanted to confront that history directly rather than ignore it.
“The audience deserved to hear that conversation out loud,” Wayans said, EW reports.
The latest installment marks the return of Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Anna Faris, and Regina Hall to the franchise. During the film’s final act, the story shifts from a traditional horror parody into a self-aware debate about ownership, legacy, and the future of “Scary Movie” itself.
According to Wayans, the creative team settled on that concept early in development. “We knew that it was going to be this confrontation about the franchise itself,” he said.
Director Michael Tiddes said the filmmakers aimed to deliver an ending that would catch audiences off guard. “Did that just happen?” he said, describing the reaction he hopes viewers have after watching the finale.
The climax features several major twists before revealing that familiar faces are at the center of the chaos. The sequence eventually breaks the fourth wall and references the franchise’s real-world history, including the Wayans brothers’ departure after “Scary Movie 2.”
Hall praised the decision to acknowledge that history on screen. “I thought it was genius,” she said, noting that the film addresses the situation while maintaining the comedy that made the franchise successful.

Faris also reflected on reuniting with the Wayans family after more than two decades.
“It has been the biggest gift of my career that I’ve had the opportunity to properly thank them,” Faris said. “I’m just happy to be part of this journey. I’m really honored.”
Tiddes said discussions about the franchise’s future often surfaced during production. He recalled joking conversations about whether the story should focus on a younger generation of characters.
“F— those kids. This is our franchise. We’re not giving this back,” he said.
For Wayans, that theme ultimately shaped the ending and helped resolve years of fan speculation about the series. Looking back on the result, he summed it up simply: “That’s a great f—ing ending.”
