*Malik Beasley, a 28-year-old NBA free agent and former Detroit Pistons shooting guard, is grappling with legal and financial troubles.
Federal authorities are investigating Beasley for allegedly betting on NBA games and prop bets during the 2023–24 season, according to ESPN. The U.S. District Attorney’s Office began the probe on June 29, though no formal charges have been filed. Beasley’s attorney, Steve Haney, defended his client, stating that an investigation does not equate to guilt and emphasizing Beasley’s right to a presumption of innocence.
Adding to his challenges, Beasley was evicted from his luxury Detroit high-rise apartment on August 6 for failing to pay rent. Court records from Detroit’s 36th District Court reveal two lawsuits filed against him in 2025 for unpaid rent totaling $21,505. While the first case was dismissed, the second resulted in an eviction order for $7,355 after Beasley failed to respond.
Beasley’s financial woes extend beyond housing. Hazan Sports Management, his former marketing agency, is suing him for not repaying a $650,000 advance. Reports also indicate unpaid debts to a celebrity barber and a dentist. Despite earning approximately $60 million over his nine-year NBA career, Beasley appears to be facing significant financial strain.
This isn’t Beasley’s first brush with the law. In 2020, he pleaded guilty to a felony for threatening a family with a firearm near his home, serving 78 days of a 120-day sentence.

Beasley’s recent NBA tenure included a one-year, $6.6 million contract with the Pistons for the 2024–25 season, where he averaged 16.3 points per game and helped the team reach the playoffs for the first time since 2019. His career has spanned multiple teams, including the Denver Nuggets, Minnesota Timberwolves, Utah Jazz, Los Angeles Lakers, and Milwaukee Bucks.
As Beasley navigates legal challenges, his future in the NBA hangs in the balance, pending the outcome of the federal probe.
