*Los Angeles, CA — An interfaith coalition of Los Angeles community organizations and faith leaders announced today the launch of an emergency “S.O.S. — Save Our Selves” Food and Supply Drive to assist thousands of residents facing the loss of their SNAP and EBT benefits on November 1 due to the ongoing federal government shutdown.

With Congress gridlocked and essential benefits at risk, the coalition is mobilizing churches, mosques, synagogues, and community centers across Los Angeles to provide free food, diapers, and essential supplies to struggling families.
“This is not about politics — it’s about people,” said Cheryl Branch, CEO of Los Angeles Metropolitan Churches, one of the lead organizers. “We refuse to stand by while thousands of Los Angeles families face hunger because of government dysfunction.”
The S.O.S. Drive will collect and distribute donations at multiple locations throughout Los Angeles beginning today, with a central distribution hub at True LA Church and partner sites such as 2nd Call.
“When government fails, community must rise,” said Pastor Douglas E. Nelson, Senior Pastor of True LA Church. “Our interfaith coalition is answering the call to serve our neighbors — no one in Los Angeles should go hungry.”

Najee Ali, Director of Project Islamic HOPE, added:
“It’s critical that South Los Angeles community residents and leaders not sit and wait for government handouts. In the words of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad, ‘We must do for self.’ We have a large senior citizen population — many sick and shut-in — along with single mothers struggling to feed their children and provide basic necessities like diapers and formula. It’s our responsibility to help these extremely vulnerable populations.
The only way to achieve this goal is for everyone to contribute what they can. We can — and must — do for self.”
“We are honored that our organization will continue to serve and assist members of our community who need it most. 2nd Call is proud to serve as an official drop-off center at our office located on La Brea and Obama for canned goods and essential supplies to support mothers in need. We are grateful to join our interfaith and community partners in the S.O.S. — Save Our Selves Food and Supply Drive, working together to ensure that no family is left without support during this critical time.” — Skipp Townsend, Founder & CEO, 2nd Call
Donations of non-perishable food items, baby formula, diapers, bottled water, and hygiene products are urgently needed. Monetary contributions are also being accepted to purchase bulk supplies.
