*Lay’s, the iconic chip brand, has launched a sweeping redesign to modernize its image and underscore its commitment to natural ingredients.
The overhaul, the most significant in nearly 100 years, eliminates artificial flavors and colors in the U.S. and introduces a revamped logo and packaging. “This redesign, the brand’s biggest in nearly a century, is a love letter to our origins,” said Carl Gerhards, PepsiCo’s Senior Director of Design, Global Lay’s, per TODAY.com.
The updated branding celebrates the potato at the heart of every chip. New packaging prominently displays the phrase “made with real potatoes” alongside vivid, close-up images of the chips. Alexis Porter, PepsiCo’s VP of Marketing, Global Lay’s, noted, “The new visual identity celebrates the humble, farm-grown potato — where every Lay’s potato chip starts — and heroes the ingredients that deliver the unmatched flavor consumers have always loved.”
The design team also enhanced the logo’s sun, introducing brighter “Lay’s Rays” and a color palette inspired by ingredients like pickle green and savory red.
Lay’s is also reformulating some products to align with its natural focus. Starting in 2026, Lay’s Baked will incorporate olive oil, while Baked Lay’s Kettle Cooked Reduced Fat Original Sea Salt will switch to avocado oil. “The potatoes’ journey from the soil to the shelf is the heart of Lay’s. But here’s the surprising part — 42% of people who enjoy Lay’s don’t realize they’re made with real, farm-grown potatoes,” the company revealed, sparking online debate.
Social media reactions highlighted skepticism about the statistic. On Reddit, one user remarked, “there’s literally a potato on the package,” while another questioned, “I really want to know the details of this study, because there’s a lot of stupid people but I frankly don’t believe that that many people don’t know potato chips are made out of potatoes.”
