*Immanuel Presbyterian Church in LA may not immediately come to mind when thinking about neo soul and hip hop, but the Koreatown-based location will be the setting for tribute concerts celebrating both genres and the fans who love it.
Secret Los Angeles reports the tributes will take place at 8:46 pm on July 11 and August 8, respectively. Orchid Quartet, the all-female classical ensemble, will be on hand to perform classical reimaginings of Lauryn Hill’s “Ex-Factor,” Childish Gambino’s “Redbone” and Miguel’s “Adorn,” in addition to SZA‘s “Good Days,” Sade‘s “Smooth Operator” and Boyz II Men‘s “End of the Road,” among other classic material.
“With similar cultural roots and rhythmic foundations, Neo Soul and Hip-Hop blend effortlessly. Many pioneers like Lauryn Hill and D’Angelo have blurred the lines between the two genres, crafting songs that intertwine soulful melodies with rap verses and spoken word,” Secret Los Angeles noted regarding the motivation for the candlelight tribute series. “This stylistic approach can also be heard in the works of many contemporary artists like Childish Gambino and SZA, whose most beloved songs you’ll be able to hear this summer reimagined at Immanuel Presbyterian Church.”
The 60-minute tributes will be the latest in a string of entertainment-related happenings involving Immanuel Presbyterian has hosted.
Over the years, the historic venue has been featured in iconic movies and television shows, including “Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit,” “John Wick,” and “The X Files.”

Music videos are no stranger to the church’s gothic design, which has graced visuals for tunes from artists such as My Chemical Romance (“Helena (So Long and Goodnight),” Eminem (“Cleanin’ Out My Closet”) and Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles (“True Colors”).
Tickets for the Immanuel Presbyterian Church Neo Soul and tribute shows are on sale now. The performances will start at 8:45 pm both days, with doors opening 45 minutes prior to showtime.
