*Chicago native and award-winning HGTV producer Kyra Epps is making a return to her hometown by teaming up with Habitat for Humanity Chicago as their new Community Impact Partner.
Known for her hit show “Buying Back the Block,” which became one of HGTV’s most streamed series, Epps is now channeling her passion for revitalizing communities into building homes and leading workshops with ReStore Chicago, according to the news release. We spoke to Kya who shared her vision for giving back, the importance of affordable housing, and how she plans to make a lasting impact in the city she calls home.
We reported previously that Kyra and her husband, comedian/actor Mike Epps, worked together to rebuild Mike’s childhood community on “Buying Back the Block.” In a statement, Kyra said, “So many people tell us how much it inspired them to rebuild their community.”
Through her partnership with Habitat for Humanity Chicago, Kyra aims to use her platform to engage the community, teach people how to design their own homes and foster a sense of pride and ownership. She will lead a workshop at Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore Chicago South grand opening and host a 2024 Women Build Team in October.
“As a Chicago native, it’s incredibly important to me to give back to my community. I want to show people that they have the power to create spaces that reflect their identity and values,” said Kyra in a statement.

“I came on board for Habitat for Humanity Chicago as their community Impact Partner. That was so special to me because I know what it feels like to have a relatable person, not somebody who’s telling you this is what you should do and this is how you should do it, but somebody who’s actually from the streets of Chicago… to come back and give that influence over how we can make this community better,” she explained.
“I am officially coming back to partner to do a lot of work in their affordable housing department. I also will be at their ReStore grand opening on October 5th. At this ReStore, I’m teaching a three-part course on how to make your house a home… and all these little tips and tricks on how to make your house feel personal to you. So if you are there, come and see me on October 5th at 63rd and Western,” Kyra said.

“I’m participating in Women Who Build Day where we’re going to the Greater Grand Crossing area, me and nine of my good friends from Chicago who are women powerhouses. We’re gonna go back and build on one of the houses in Greater Grand Crossing,” Kyra Epps added.
“It’s a lot of physical hard work and labor that I’m bringing back,” Kyra continued.
“Hopefully it is influential to people to buy back in their community,” she shared, adding, “…we are coming back to share this information and knowledge and hopefully our biggest hope is that people really receive it in a way that it will work in their benefit.”
