*Tracee Ellis Ross recently opened up about her relationship choices and personal growth in a candid appearance on Michelle Obama’s podcast IMO, co-hosted by Craig Robinson.
At 52, the acclaimed actress shared her reasons for dating younger men, stating that emotional openness is a key factor. “Anything that starts to smell of [toxic masculinity] for me—I did enough of it… I have no interest in it and I will not do it again,” Ross said.
The “Black-ish” star also reflected on the emotional complexities of being single without children. “As much grief does surface for me around not having children and not having a partner… I still wouldn’t want the wrong partner,” she explained. Ross emphasized that any relationship she enters must enhance her life, not simply exist for appearance’s sake.
Her previous comments on the issue drew criticism from Kevin Samuels, the late controversial internet figure known for his polarizing takes on dating and gender dynamics. Before he died in 2022, Samuels responded to Ross’s views in a video, claiming that women her age are not typically chosen by the kind of men they desire, SandraRose.com reports.
“Men are not selecting Tracee Ellis Ross for marriage,” he said, although he acknowledged she remains attractive and publicly desirable. “A lot of guys would slay that easy… but would a man that she wants do it?”

Samuels, who passed away at 53 from hypertension-related causes, argued that women who remain single into later years lose relationship value. “The longer you’re by yourself, the less likely you are a good fit for anybody else,” he claimed.
Despite the criticism, Ross remains committed to finding love on her own terms, steering clear of dating apps and favoring connections through mutual circles or professional settings, especially with individuals who, in her words, “have as much to lose as me.”
For Ross, it’s about quality over convention. “You have to make my life better,” she said, “it can’t just be I’m in a relationship just to be in a relationship.”
