*Kemi Badenoch advanced to the top of the political ladder to become the first Black individual of African descent to lead the opposition in the UK’s Conservative Party, succeeding Rishi Sunak, who was the party’s first Asian leader.
Badenoch, who is married to Hamish Badenoch, stated that she no longer identifies as Nigerian and hasn’t renewed her Nigerian passport since the early 2000s. Born in Wimbledon in 1980, she moved to Nigeria with her parents and is one of three children in a Yoruba family.
Recently, during Nigerian President Bola Tinubu’s state visit to the United Kingdom, Badenoch’s absence was especially notable given her heritage and previous remarks that distanced her from national identity. She has also expressed criticism of Nigeria in past interviews, which has sparked responses from both Nigerian officials and the public.
President Bola Tinubu ended his UK trip without meeting Kemi Badenoch, the opposition leader, prompting debate about Nigeria–UK relations.
