*One month to the week after the fatal shooting of 43-year-old father Keith Porter Jr., his family and their legal team, now joined by nationally renowned civil rights attorney Ben Crump, will hold a press conference demanding concrete action.
The event, scheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday, February 3, aims to escalate pressure for an independent investigation and the arrest of the off-duty U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent responsible for Porter’s death on New Year’s Eve.
Porter was shot and killed outside his Los Angeles apartment complex. The involvement of an off-duty federal immigration officer has raised significant questions and stalled local progress, prompting the family to seek intervention at the state level.
“The Porter family has endured an unimaginable loss, compounded by a month of waiting for transparency and accountability,” said attorney Jamal Tooson, who represents the family. “The current investigative path lacks the necessary independence. We will detail new developments and demand the immediate arrest of the agent involved. No one, especially a federal officer, should be above the law.”

Attorney Crump will amplify the call for an external review, directly urging California Attorney General Rob Bonta to take over the investigation.
“When a federal officer is involved in a civilian death, public trust requires an investigation free from any potential institutional bias,” Crump stated ahead of the conference.
He added: “Keith Porter Jr. was a father, a son, and a community member whose life was taken. We are here to ensure his death is met with a rigorous, impartial pursuit of justice.”

The press conference will be held at the community organization 2nd Call on Obama Boulevard in Los Angeles. The family is expected to speak about Keith Porter Jr.’s life and the devastating impact of his loss on his two children.

The case has drawn attention to the complexities of investigating officer-involved shootings when the agent is off-duty and from a federal agency with a contentious public profile in California. The family’s legal team argues that a state-led investigation by the Attorney General’s office is the only way to ensure a credible and conclusive outcome.
