*The controversial case of Jussie Smollett takes center stage in a new Netflix documentary now streaming on Netflix. Titled “The Truth About Jussie Smollett?,” the 90-minute film, produced by Raw and directed by Gagan Rehill, marks Smollett’s first in-depth involvement in a documentary about the 2019 incident. In it, he seeks to reaffirm his claim of being a victim of a genuine hate crime in Chicago, presenting what he says is previously unseen evidence.
During a summer gathering with community leaders and criminal justice advocates on Chicago’s South Side, Smollett discussed the documentary at the Chicago Torture Justice Center, where he once donated $10,000. “It’ll make sense when y’all watch it,” Smollett said, per Block Club Chicago. “They found the actual footage of the people that jumped me, and it just corroborates every single thing that I’ve said for the last almost seven years.” He explained that investigative journalists obtained the footage through the Freedom of Information Act, but it reached his legal team too late for his 2021 trial.
Smollett noted the timing of the evidence was a setback for his defense. “[The footage] was brought to my lawyers a couple days before we started trial… we already got our defense, so it’s too late to bring that in,” he explained. “They did not go with the truth. They went with defending against the lies.”
The documentary, described as a “shocking true story of an allegedly fake story that some now say might just be a true story,” aims to shed light on these claims.
After a lengthy legal battle, Smollett’s 2024 conviction for filing a false police report was overturned by the Illinois Supreme Court. He later reached a settlement with the City of Chicago by agreeing to make donations to local organizations. Through his new documentary, Smollett hopes to connect with viewers on a deeper level, inviting them to revisit his story and consider the evidence he believes supports his account.
