*The 2026 Roots Picnic just got a major headline act.
Grammy Award-winning rapper, producer, and entrepreneur JAY-Z has been confirmed to take the stage alongside The Roots at this year’s festival, scheduled for May 30 and May 31 at the Belmont Plateau in Philadelphia.
According to NBC Philadelphia, the star-studded billing arrives alongside a significant logistical shift. Organizers recently confirmed the festival would be departing the Mann Center in favor of the Belmont Plateau, a decision rooted in the turbulent experience many attendees had at last year’s event. Scores of festivalgoers vented their frustration online after day one, describing hours spent waiting outside and pointing to a breakdown in communication from the event’s team. A public acknowledgment from organizers came the next day, along with a pledge to make meaningful changes.

Those changes are now taking shape. The 2026 edition will feature an overhauled Roots Picnic app and SMS notification system to keep attendees better informed throughout the day. A second entry point will be added to distribute crowd flow more effectively, and a strengthened ambassador presence will be deployed both on the festival grounds and in surrounding areas. Premium offerings for general admission and VIP ticket holders are also set to receive an upgrade.
Shawn Gee, Manager of The Roots and President of Live Nation Urban, framed the occasion as a milestone moment for everyone involved. “Moving the Roots Picnic to Belmont Plateau and bringing JAŸ-Z and The Roots together to perform are both bucket-list moments for us,” Gee said.
“After meeting with Mayor Cherelle Parker and hearing her vision for Philadelphia 250, she truly inspired us to dream even bigger, and we’re grateful to her, Commissioner Susan Slawson, Jazelle Jones and everyone who helped make it happen. We can’t wait to see everyone in May at the Plat,” Gee added.
