The family of Jaque Rabon, a 23-year-old son, brother, and cherished loved one, is demanding answers and accountability after Jaque was shot and killed while unarmed by San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputies in Riverside.
Witnesses say that Jaque, who was unarmed, was leaving a Starbucks at the Tyler Mall when deputies approached him. Witnesses reported that deputies opened fire, shooting him multiple times despite his being unarmed and posing no threat.
Eyewitness video from the scene captures a bystander saying he “saw everything,” that Jaque did not have a weapon, and that deputies “shot him for nothing.” These accounts confirm the family’s deepest fears — that Jaque’s life was taken unjustifiably and without cause.
The U.S. Department of Justice has opened an investigation into the shooting. The family welcomes this federal review and hopes it brings transparency and truth.
Beyond the tragedy of his final moments, Jaque Rabon lived a life full of love, talent, and promise. He adored his mom, dad, and sibling. He was a young man with a big personality — someone who loved football, who loved to dance, and who poured his energy and creativity into becoming an aspiring rapper. Jaque had dreams, passions, and a future he was actively building. His family remembers him as thoughtful and caring.
Now, they are left with unbearable grief — and an unwavering resolve to seek justice.
The family calls for full transparency and the immediate release of all footage, reports, and investigative materials related to the shooting. They demand accountability for those responsible and an end to the systemic failures that continue to take the lives of young Black men.
The family is represented by civil rights attorney Toni Jaramilla. Ms. Jaramilla states, “Mr. Rabon should still be alive today. His family deserves the truth, and we will not stop until there is full accountability for his death.”
His parents state, “Our son did not deserve to be gunned down. We are heartbroken, but we will not be silent. We will fight for the truth, and we will fight for justice — for Jaque and for every family who has suffered this kind of tragedy.”

“The killing of Jaque Rabon by San Bernardino Sheriff’s deputies raises serious and urgent questions. His family deserves the truth. This community deserves transparency. And our nation deserves accountability. We are calling for the release of all body camera footage and a full prosecutorial review. If wrongdoing is found, those responsible must be held accountable under the law. No badge should ever be a shield from justice. The law must apply equally to everyone. We stand with Jaque Rabon’s family. We will not be silent. We will not look away. And we will continue to demand justice until justice is delivered.”
Pastor Jonathan Moseley, Western Regional Director of the National Action Network.
“We have seen in recent days the escalation of law enforcement officers killing unarmed citizens across the nation, from Minneapolis to Riverside, California. The San Bernardino Sheriff’s Deputies who shot and murdered Jaque Rabon should be immediately arrested and prosecuted for his unjust murder.” – Najee Ali, Director of Project Islamic Hope
The family, their legal team, and community supporters will speak publicly about the shooting, the DOJ investigation, and their demands for justice.
