*Nearly three decades after starring in the original “Anaconda,” Ice Cube is returning to the Amazon for a cameo in the new comedy starring Jack Black and Paul Rudd. The announcement came during the Los Angeles premiere of the Sony Pictures film, Deadline reports.
Ice Cube, who originally played cameraman Danny Rich, spoke to reporters about his role. “It’s cool to do a cameo, to kind of make it go full circle in a way,” he said. “When they asked me to do it, when I knew the kind of movie they were doing, I jumped at it. I’m like, ‘This is something different. It’s cool.’” He added, “People probably get a kick out of me popping on the screen.”
The film follows childhood best friends Doug (Black) and Griff (Rudd) as they attempt to remake their favorite film. Their journey into the Amazon quickly turns perilous when a real giant anaconda appears, threatening the chaotic movie production.
The 1997 original featured Jennifer Lopez as documentary filmmaker Terri Flores, with Ice Cube, Jon Voight, Eric Stoltz, Jonathan Hyde, and Owen Wilson rounding out the cast. The story followed a crew navigating the Amazon rainforest while a snake hunter tracked a massive green anaconda.
Although critics gave the original mixed-to-negative reviews, it achieved box office success and developed a cult following throughout the 1990s. “Anaconda” opened at number one with $16.6 million during its debut weekend and retained that position the following week. Its worldwide total reached $136.8 million, solidifying its place as a memorable late-90s thriller.
The new “Anaconda” hits theaters in the U.S. on Christmas. Watch the trailer above.
