A Comic artist’s Father – A tribute
Alas, my father Emmanuel Olushola Fatunla has passed away! He passed on 6th January 2025 at age 91 but left behind memories and a legacy worth celebrating. I remember him as my hero this Black History Month which is in its second week this February. Without dad creating me through God, I would not have been here to do the much I have done in the field of Cartoon and Comic art and documenting illustrated Black history through the years. Dad, together with my mother supported my trip to the US to study Cartoon Graphics. He had the opportunity to meet the legendary Comic artist Joe Kubert during my graduation at the Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art in Dover New Jersey (now known as the Kubert School) and he also met Sergio Aragones, famed MAD magazine cartoonist and a number of great comic artists.

He traveled from Nigeria to attend my graduation and I made him proud through the years. He would always genuinely share my work with many in Nigeria and in the UK where he lived till he passed. That’s how proud he was with an appreciative heart. It must be said, that caring for him in his old age brought about awareness of the need for many children to take good care of their elderly (I was dad’s Caretaker for two and a half years) especially in the Black community as old age will catch up with everyone. Without a past, there cannot be a future…without my black heroes, Pa Fatunla and Ma Fatunla, there would not have been me or OUR ROOTS and FACT FINDER cartoons and several of the many cartoons I have produced over the years.

Reggae legend would have been 80 years old on 6th February
He gave reggae music to the world with songs such as One Love, Redemption song, and Three Little Birds with lyrics, with the popular chorus “Don’t worry about a thing ‘Cause every little thing gonna be alright” – America needs a song like this today, that promotes positivity in the face of adversity.
