*Don Lemon is stepping into the spotlight for a very different kind of recognition. Despite navigating a fresh set of federal charges, Lemon has been tapped to receive a prestigious honor at the 12th annual Truth Awards next month.
According to Rolling Out, the event is a production of Better Brothers Los Angeles, developed in collaboration with Emmy winner Sheryl Lee Ralph’s DIVA Foundation and powered by ViiV Healthcare, with a mission rooted in uplifting Black LGBTQ voices and allies who have shaped culture, media, and public life. Event organizers are standing by their decision to recognize Lemon, citing his body of work as a journalist who has consistently pushed audiences to think critically and engage with stories that matter.
The charges against Lemon trace back to January 18, when he traveled to a Minnesota church to document an anti-ICE demonstration that unfolded during an active Sunday service. He published footage of himself speaking with protesters who flooded the building, chanting “Ice out” while rallying around the case of Renee Good, who had been killed by an ICE agent. Federal prosecutors accused Lemon of moving beyond the protections afforded to the press and into territory that interfered with congregants’ ability to worship freely.

A Los Angeles judge overseeing a January 30 hearing cleared Lemon to go home without posting bail. Lemon has pleaded not guilty to the federal charges that include conspiracy to violate religious freedom rights and a breach of the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act, known as the FACE Act, a law that prohibits using or threatening force to prevent people from exercising their right to worship.
The Truth Awards is a yearly celebration honoring the Black LGBTQ+ community, with its 11th annual edition taking place on March 15, 2025, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills. Beyond recognizing outstanding individuals, the event also supports the next generation by awarding scholarships between $1,000 and $5,000 to Black LGBTQ+ students.
