*Legendary house music DJ and producer Deeon ‘DJ Deeon’ Boyd has died at age 56 after a series of health issues.
The news was confirmed in a statement shared on his official Facebook page.
“I am sorry to announce the legendary Artist, Producer, DJ, Label owner, and my friend Deeon ‘DJ Deeon’ Boyd gained his wings today,” the message read. “The family thanks you for your support and will announce arrangements in the coming days. Thank you for your understanding. #DJDEEONforever #GRC #lowendforlife.”
Boyd’s cause of death has not yet been confirmed.
As Metro reports, Boyd battled a string of health issues over the years, including cancer, a leg amputation, a mini-stroke, and he underwent a quadruple bypass heart surgery.
“Something inside me was really not happy and wasn’t getting any better,’ he shared. ‘My recovery became twice as slow to get better each time it happened,” he added.
Boyd pioneered the Chicago-based subgenre of house music known as “ghetto house.” He told DIRTYBIRD Records in a 2016 interview that his style was influenced by Kraftwerk, John Rocca and Soulsonic Force, NPR reports.
“Once I heard electronic dance music, there wasn’t no other music to listen to. There was nothing else. My mind was just focused on that.”
Fans flocked to social media to pay tribute to the beloved DJ following news of his passing.
“Countless happy moments you gave us at any dancefloor your music was played…thank you for them all, RIP DJ Deeon,’ one wrote, according to the Metro.
‘Truly devastating — you were the soundtrack to so my most fun, unforgettable memories… the sound you pioneered, the movement you inspired, the lives you’ve touched…, [sic]’ another said.
“DJ Deeon was a trailblazer, who cultivated, and captivated. Rest easy, King. We’ll keep it G for you down here in your memory,” one fan added.
