*D’Angelo has withdrawn from his scheduled performance at the 17th annual Roots Picnic in Philadelphia, citing ongoing health challenges following a recent surgery.
The 51-year-old R&B icon shared the news on Instagram, expressing regret over the cancellation. “It is with the deepest of regrets that (I) must cancel my performance at the Roots Picnic in Philadelphia next weekend,” he wrote. “But, due to an unforeseen medical delay regarding surgery (I) had earlier this year, (I’ve) been advised by my team of specialists that the performance this weekend could further complicate matters.”
The Roots Picnic organizers responded with support, reposting D’Angelo’s message and adding, “We’re sending love and keeping him in our thoughts as he continues to heal!”
Despite the absence of the neo-soul pioneer, the festival, set for next weekend, boasts a robust lineup featuring Meek Mill, Lenny Kravitz, GloRilla, Miguel, Tems, Latto, Kaytranada, and Jeezy, as reported by Billboard. Maxwell has been announced as D’Angelo’s replacement.
D’Angelo’s career has left an indelible mark on music since the mid-1990s. He first rose to prominence co-producing “U Will Know” for Black Men United before his 1995 debut album, “Brown Sugar,” earned platinum status and critical praise for sparking the neo-soul movement. Its hit single “Lady” climbed into the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100. Collaborations with luminaries like Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, and Angie Stone followed, cementing his influence.

His 2000 album, “Voodoo,” debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, with its lead single “Untitled (How Does It Feel)” securing a Grammy for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance and the album winning Best R&B Album.
Despite his success, D’Angelo grappled with personal challenges, including struggles with alcoholism, which led to a period of limited musical output. He made a triumphant return with his 2014 album “Black Messiah,” which peaked at number five on the Billboard 200. That same year, he contributed the track “Unshaken” to the “Red Dead Redemption 2″ soundtrack.
As D’Angelo focuses on his recovery, fans continue to await his return to the stage.
