*A coalition of Compton Latino and African American community leaders is calling on Compton Mayor Emma Sharif to immediately remove her political appointee, Bishop L.J. Guillory, from his position as Chairman of Public Safety for the City of Compton.
Community leaders point to Guillory’s long history of making inflammatory and racially insensitive remarks about the Latino community, culminating in his most recent statements made during public comment and caught on video. During those remarks, Guillory declared that he would “bring the immigration czar (Tom Homan) to Compton to deal with illegal immigrants and residents who shouldn’t be here.”
“These comments from the city’s Public Safety Chair are divisive, dangerous, and create fear in a community that has already been terrorized by ICE agents locally and nationwide,” said longtime Compton activist Abril Villanueva.
Via a press release sent to EURweb, leaders also expressed grave concern over Guillory’s background, noting that he is a convicted felon who served more than 15 years in federal prison for kidnapping and other crimes. They say this raises serious questions about Mayor Sharif’s judgment in appointing him to oversee matters of public safety.
“We demand that Mayor Sharif remove Guillory from his appointment as Chair of Public Safety immediately,” the release concluded.
