*Janelle James, star of “Abbott Elementary,” recently opened up about a generous gesture from Chris Rock during his 2017 Total Blackout tour. At the time, James said she was struggling financially and wore “ratty” clothes to avoid unwanted attention as a young female comedian.
“My clothes were ratty,” she told Vulture’s Good One podcast. James explained that early in her career, wearing mini skirts often drew inappropriate “remarks,” so she chose more modest attire.
During the first leg of the tour, she became aware that Rock had taken note of her shabby footwear. Soon after, James received an invitation from his assistant to fly to Los Angeles to get “glammed up.”
“I didn’t take it any kind of way,” she said. “I was like, ‘This is amazing.’ Like Pretty Woman or whatever.”

James described being able to choose from racks of luxury clothing, noting she had “never even seen things that expensive” before. Excited about her upgraded wardrobe, James appreciated that Rock kept the gesture low-key.
“He didn’t say anything, which I appreciate,” she said. “He wasn’t like, ‘See what I’ve done for you?’ He just looked at me. He said, ‘You’re doing well for yourself.’ That’s what he said. And then we continued on with the tour.”
Rock’s generosity highlights how a simple gesture can leave a lasting impact, turning a period of struggle into an uplifting and empowering experience.
