*President Donald Trump announced on “Fox & Friends” that a suspect has been taken into custody in connection with the shooting death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
“I think, with a high degree of certainty, we have him in custody,” Trump said during the Friday morning interview.
“Subject to change but the facts are the facts we have the person that we think is the person we’re looking for,” he added. “Essentially, somebody that was very close to him turned him in,” Trump said.

NBC News reports that authorities detained 22-year-old Utah resident Tyler Robinson in the assassination of Kirk at Utah Valley University, with Trump confirming the investigation into the attack continues.
Robinson was turned in by a family member who recognized him from surveillance images released Thursday. “Essentially, somebody that was very close to him turned him in,” Trump said. Public records show Robinson’s last voter registration was on July 13, 2021, with no declared political party affiliation.
Surveillance video from Kirk’s rally shows the suspect descending from a rooftop at the university, where officials believe the fatal shot was fired on Sept 10. Additional footage and photos depict Robinson, wearing a shirt with an apparent American flag design and carrying a black backpack, moving to and from the campus. Law enforcement has not yet publicly confirmed the arrest.
A “high-powered bolt action rifle,” identified as an older Mauser .30-06 caliber model wrapped in a towel, was recovered in a wooded area near the campus, per FBI Special Agent in Charge Robert Bohls. The rifle contained a spent cartridge and three unspent ones with inscriptions described as “transgender and anti-fascist.”
On Wednesday, Robinson allegedly arrived at the Orem campus at 11:52 a.m., reached a rooftop, and fired a single shot at Kirk around 12:20 p.m., before fleeing into a nearby neighborhood, according to Utah Department of Public Safety Commissioner Beau Mason.
State officials are pursuing the death penalty if the case proceeds to trial.
President Trump demands the
death penalty for Charlie Kirk’s assassin:“I hope he gets the death penalty. Charlie Kirk was the finest person. He didn’t deserve this. He worked so hard and so well. Everybody liked him.”
