Maryland Bus Driver Hero Ruize Bell Saves Passengers’ Lives
*Ruize Bell, a 63-year-old Maryland bus driver, is being remembered as a hero after saving his passengers’ lives during a heart attack. Bell managed to safely pull over and stop his Ride On bus in Gaithersburg before collapsing and passing away. His selfless actions likely prevented a greater tragedy, according to authorities and loved ones.
Bell had worked for the Montgomery County Department of Transportation since 2012. His quick thinking and calm under pressure have been praised by both officials and his family, who say it reflects his character and lifelong dedication to others.
Family Remembers a Loving Father and Dedicated Driver
Zhane Bell, one of Ruize Bell’s six daughters, shared how proud she is of her father’s final act. “He was actually able to pull over and stop and park it safely,” she told WUSA. “I was like, ‘Dang, that’s my dad.’ Because no matter what, he thought about everybody else before himself.”
Zhane added, “Just to see how everybody’s pouring in all the love and everything, calling him a hero, is really, really warming inside.” She said Bell loved his job, constantly talking about the people he met daily. His passion for driving and connecting with others was a big part of his life.

Community Honors Bell’s Selfless Actions
Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich praised Bell, saying he had prevented “what could have been an even greater tragedy.” Elrich highlighted Bell’s calm under pressure, noting it showed the kind of person he was — someone known for his humor, kindness, and dedication to his coworkers and passengers.
In his statement, Elrich expressed condolences to Bell’s wife, children, and coworkers, thanking the bus riders who tried to assist during the emergency. “His loss is a hard one, and he will be missed,” Elrich said.
What Made Ruize Bell Stand Out in His Life and Work
Bell was more than just a bus driver; he was a beloved father of 10, a fan of golf and grilling, and a devoted Dallas Cowboys supporter. Friends and family describe him as a warm, caring man who loved making people smile, whether at home or on his bus routes.
His long service with the Maryland County Department of Transportation earned him the respect of both riders and coworkers. His final act — thinking first of the safety of others — sums up the way he lived his life.
