*Brian McKnight has filed a defamation lawsuit against North Carolina radio station Foxy 107.1, its parent company Urban One, and host Karen Clark, accusing them of amplifying damaging claims about his character and conduct as a father, according to All Hip Hop.
The lawsuit centers on a January 23, 2025 broadcast featuring an interview with McKnight’s ex-wife, Julie McKnight. During the segment, Julie alleged that McKnight was emotionally and mentally abusive and a neglectful father. She also claimed that she and their children were forced out of their home when the children were toddlers, and that McKnight sent a troubling message while their son Niko was undergoing cancer treatment. Julie attributed the estrangement between McKnight and his children to what she described as his harmful behavior.
McKnight contends that host Karen Clark failed to remain impartial throughout the interview, arguing that her commentary and line of questioning shaped the segment in a way that cast him as dishonest, abusive, and an unfit parent.

The suit also names Urban One’s nationally syndicated Rickey Smiley Morning Show over a December 15, 2025 podcast episode that allegedly replayed a clip from a separate interview with McKnight’s son Brian McKnight Jr. In that clip, the younger McKnight claimed his father refused to tell Niko he loved him before Niko died of cancer. According to the lawsuit, the clip was broadcast without context or any opportunity for McKnight to respond, and on-air reactions reportedly framed the story in a way that reinforced the negative portrayal.
McKnight has been publicly estranged from his older children for years, with his kids repeatedly alleging online that he abandoned them. McKnight has consistently disputed that characterization, maintaining that the public narrative surrounding his role as a father is both incomplete and misleading.
