OUR ROOTS, which documents Black History, has since appeared in numerous publications, including the Sacramento Observer, the News Sentinel, Atlanta Voice, Christian Science Monitor, New African, and BBC Focus on Africa.
In 2008, it began running on EURweb.com after Boondocks cartoons ended, with publisher Lee Bailey quickly appreciating the impact of the Black history cartoons by Tayo Fatunla.
This February, OUR ROOTS returned to the New York Amsterdam News for Black History Month, accompanied by a slideshow of selected illustrations online.
As Jerry Robinson once stated, “Tayo Fatunla’s OUR ROOTS itself deserves recognition for its unique contribution, through art and journalism, to racial understanding.”

TAYO Fatunla is a British Nigerian comic artist, editorial cartoonist, writer, and illustrator whose work has featured on MSN.com via EURweb.com. He created the “OUR ROOTS” series, highlighting Black history figures, earning the 2018 ECBACC Pioneer Lifetime Achievement Award. A former cartoonist for Nigerian newspapers, he was named Professional Creative Cartoonist of the Year at the 2024 Annual Achievement Recognition Awards (The Building Blocks Initiative, UK). He also illustrated Camberwell’s public Black history walk map. https://www.instagram.com/tfatunla123
