DISCLAIMER:
This is not an anti-white argument. It is an anti–white supremacy argument, an anti-historical-erasure argument, and a critique of systems, not individuals. The purpose of this column is analytical, moral, and historical: to examine whether Western societies would be independently and sustainably relevant without the contributions of African and African American people.
*Human history is a story of exchange—of intellect, labor, conflict, creativity, culture, science, and spiritual struggle. Every civilization has produced light and darkness. Yet when we follow the factual record, one truth becomes unavoidable: Europe and the United States did not rise through independent innovation, peaceful growth, or sustainable moral systems. Their dominance required centuries of extraction—of land, of people, of culture, of labor, and of ideas.
From the Crusades to the Inquisition, from the Transatlantic Slave Trade to the carving up of Africa, from the Trail of Tears to World Wars I and II, European powers produced the deadliest conflicts and the most expansive systems of exploitation in world history—over 100 million deaths in the 20th century alone (Uppsala Conflict Data Program).
This raises the central, biblically anchored question:

Without Black people’s history, are white societies independently and sustainably relevant?
For centuries, American and European institutions constructed a mythology of independent greatness—yet nearly every sector of Western progress contains the fingerprints of Black genius, Black labor, Black culture, and Black spirituality.
And in many cases, the architects of these contributions were erased, miscredited, stolen, or buried.
To answer the question, we must evaluate whether Western relevance could exist independently (without Black contributions) and whether it could endure sustainably (without collapsing under the weight of injustice).
THE BIBLE SPEAKS DIRECTLY TO THIS QUESTION
Before addressing history, God’s Word offers the moral framework.
“Woe to him who builds a city with bloodshed and establishes a town by injustice.” — Habakkuk 2:12 (NIV)
Empires built on exploitation are not sustainable in God’s view.
“He has shown you what is good… to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God.” — Micah 6:8 (NIV)
True relevance is moral, not militaristic or economic.
“Blessed are the peacemakers…” — Matthew 5:9 (KJV)
Violence does not create sustainable power.
Peace does.
Humility does.
Justice does.
By these biblical standards, Western dominance—built on slavery, genocide, and colonization—does not qualify as independent or sustainable relevance.

I. WITHOUT BLACK INVENTION, AMERICA IS NOT INDEPENDENTLY RELEVANT
(1600s–1900s Black inventions, discoveries & stolen innovations)
From the 1600s onward, African and African American innovation shaped the foundations of American society—often without credit.
1600s–1700s
- Onesimus (enslaved African) introduced inoculation technology—saving Boston and laying the foundation for modern vaccination.
- African rice farmers engineered the irrigation systems that made South Carolina a major colony.
- Enslaved Blacksmiths created agricultural tools slaveholders patented under their own names.
White America was not independently relevant in medicine, agriculture, or early technology.
1800s
Under slavery, Black inventors were legally barred from holding patents, so white slave owners took credit. Black inventions laid the foundation for:
- Cotton processing
- Horse-drawn agricultural machinery
- Steam-boiler safety systems
- Shipyard innovations
- Mechanical reaping technologies
After slavery:
- Lewis Latimer perfected Edison’s light bulb.
- Benjamin Montgomery invented the steamboat propeller.
- Granville Woods modernized railroads and telecommunication.
- Elijah McCoy revolutionized lubrication systems (“the real McCoy”).
White progress was not independent — it was dependent on Black genius.
Early 1900s
- Garrett Morgan — traffic light, gas mask
- Frederick McKinley Jones — refrigerated trucking (global food industry)
- Otis Boykin — pacemaker resistor, IBM devices
- Marie Van Brittan Brown — home security system
- Dr. Charles Drew — blood banking
American infrastructure is literally Black-engineered.
Remove Black innovators from 1600–1900, and America does not function.
Thus, Western technological relevance was never independent, and it certainly was not sustainable without Black creativity.

II. WITHOUT BLACK MILITARY EXCELLENCE, AMERICA DOES NOT SURVIVE
- First Rhode Island Regiment (Revolutionary War)
- 54th Massachusetts (Civil War)
- Buffalo Soldiers
- Harlem Hellfighters (WWI)
- Tuskegee Airmen (WWII)
- 6888th Battalion (WWII)
Black soldiers repeatedly rescued a nation that denied them humanity.
White America’s military relevance was not independent — it required Black sacrifice.
III. WITHOUT BLACK LABOR AND ECONOMIC FOUNDATIONS, AMERICA HAS NO SUSTAINABLE WEALTH
Black people built the agricultural, industrial, and financial backbone of the nation.
By 1860:
- Cotton represented over 50% of all U.S. exports
- Northern banks, Ivy Leagues, shipping companies, and insurance firms built their wealth on enslaved labor
After slavery, Black economic engines like:
- Tulsa’s Black Wall Street
- Durham’s Hayti District
- Richmond’s Jackson Ward
were destroyed because white systems could not compete with independent Black prosperity.
White America’s wealth was not self-generated, and it was certainly not sustainable without Black labor.

IV. WITHOUT BLACK CULTURE, AMERICA HAS NO SOUL — AND NO GLOBAL RELEVANCE
Remove Black cultural influence, and America becomes unrecognizable:
- No jazz
- No blues
- No gospel
- No hip-hop
- No R&B
- No soul
- No rock (born from Black blues)
Remove:
- Baldwin
- Morrison
- Hurston
- Poitier
- Beyoncé
- Jackson
- Serena
- Simone Biles
And America loses the global cultural force that gives it its identity.
Cultural relevance? Not independent. Not sustainable.

V. WITHOUT HBCUs AND BLACK INTELLECTUAL LEADERSHIP, AMERICA CANNOT FUNCTION
HBCUs produce:
- 40% of Black engineers
- 50% of Black lawyers
- 70% of Black doctors
- 80% of Black judges
(UNCF)
Remove HBCUs and you erase the backbone of America’s scientific, legal, medical, and civic leadership.
White America does not—and never has—produced these outcomes independently or at scale.
THE HUMANISTIC AND BIBLICAL CONCLUSION
After examining the facts:
Without Black people’s history, white societies are neither independent nor sustainably relevant.
Why?
Because Western “achievement” was built on:
- Black labor
- Black innovation
- Black intellectual leadership
- Black culture
- Black agriculture
- Black moral correction
- Black spirituality
- Black sacrifice
When we strip away:
- slavery
- colonization
- genocide
- patent theft
- cultural appropriation
- economic extraction
White Western societies are left with philosophy, literature, some science, and an extremely violent geopolitical record.
Meanwhile, Black contributions built, enriched, corrected, and humanized America.
Scripture tells us:
- Nations built on injustice collapse (Habakkuk 2:12).
- Moral relevance requires justice, mercy, and humility (Micah 6:8).
- God honors peacemakers, not conquerors (Matthew 5:9).
Black people didn’t just participate in America—
they stabilized it.
They didn’t just contribute—
they sustained it.
They didn’t just help build the nation—
they made it morally, culturally, and spiritually relevant.
That is the historical truth.
That is the biblical truth.
And that is the sustainable truth.
