Big Freedia Announces Death of Partner Devon Hurst at 38
*Bounce queen, Big Freedia is grieving the heartbreaking loss of her longtime partner Devon Hurst, who passed away from complications related to diabetes. The New Orleans bounce music pioneer shared the tragic news on Instagram, expressing deep sorrow after Hurst died peacefully, surrounded by loved ones.
“I’m devastated,” Freedia wrote in the caption of a touching tribute post that featured a graphic-enhanced image of the couple. Hurst was 38 years old. According to US Weekly, he is survived by his mother Chareen Hurst, siblings Meshonda, Stephany, Jayla, Steven, Stephon, and Malcolm, children Zyrielle and Davone, and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family members — including Freedia.
Freedia Reflects on Love, Loss, and Peace
In her emotional statement, Freedia said Hurst will be “deeply missed by everyone in this community who knew him and loved him.” She continued, “We take comfort in knowing he is free from any pain and suffering, and is at peace in the loving arms of Jesus Christ.”
The message ended with a request from both the Hurst and Ross families, asking the public to respect their privacy during this difficult time and to “please say a prayer for our family.” Information on a public memorial service is expected to be announced soon.

A Love That Spanned Two Decades
Hurst and Freedia had been together for 20 years, forming one of the most enduring and visible relationships in the LGBTQ+ music community. Fans first met Devon during the debut of Freedia’s hit Fuse reality series, Big Freedia Bounces Back, which aired from 2013 to 2017. The six-season show gave viewers an inside look at Freedia’s career rise, personal challenges, and love life.
Their relationship continued to evolve in the public eye with Freedia’s current series, Big Freedia Means Biz, which premiered in 2023. Though the couple faced ups and downs, they remained deeply connected. Just before the show’s debut, Freedia opened up about their bond in an interview with The Bitter Southerner.
Freedia on Enduring Love Through Hard Times
Reflecting on their relationship in 2023, Freedia acknowledged the challenges they faced but reaffirmed her love for Hurst. “When you love somebody, you endure the good and the bad and that’s what it’s about right now,” she said. “Just trying to stick in there with him because I love him so much.”
Those words ring even more poignant today as fans and followers send an outpouring of love and support for Freedia during this time of loss.
