As Maya Avant, Mosely was among the ones to check for on the CBS soap opera, which introduced her character in 2013. Looking back on her days as Maya, Mosely shared her thoughts about the fashion model character and her initial reaction to when Maya came out as transgender in 2015.
“When my boss asked me if I would do this story, I first was going to say no because it felt inappropriate for me to play that role as a cis woman,” Mosley told People. “I do identify as queer, but I’m not transgender.”
At the time, Maya’s coming out came amid real life developments for Caitlyn Jenner, who weighed in on her personal transition, Deadline noted. For Mosely, it was a question of whether to continue her role knowing her real life sexuality wasn’t the same as her character’s. Fortunately, the “Hi-5” alum’s friends brought the bigger picture in to play, advising her that “if you don’t accept this story, this story won’t be told.”
Mosely ultimately took on Maya’s storyline and made history in the process, becoming the first transgender bride to be married on daytime television. Maya ‘s presence and Mosley performance served as a vehicle to bring light to the trans community, a point Mosely is proud to be a part of.

“I am so grateful for that character because people who loved Maya and then had issues with what she said had to ask themselves like, even with a family member, ‘Well, if I loved her yesterday, why don’t I love her today?’ I actually had to grapple with that question, and I had so much feedback around healing that was able to happen within families and communities because of that storyline,” she said.
As for her departure from playing Maya, Mosely admits it reached “a certain point it really became truly inappropriate for me to play that role.”
“That’s why I stepped away from it,” she added. So no, I will not be playing another trans role.”
Nowadays, soap fans can catch Mosely in a different universe as part of “Beyond the Gates.” The new series, features the entertainer as Dani Dupree, a former model turned momager.
While the notion of playing a trans role again is not on her radar, Mosely acknowledged Maya’s impact while voicing how she “would love to play a role with the kind of gravitas and importance that Maya had for sure.”
