*LOS ANGELES, CA – A coalition of Los Angeles County Democratic Party activists is calling for the immediate removal of Basil Kimbrew as chairman of the California Democratic Party Veterans Caucus by California Democratic Party Chairman Rusty Hicks, and for his removal from leadership in the Democratic National Committee Veterans Caucus by DNC Chairman Ken Martin.
An emergency restraining order was filed against Kimbrew by Rick L. Callender, regional president of the California and Hawaii chapter of the NAACP, and was granted in October. Kimbrew is a Los Angeles–based political consultant once described by the Los Angeles Times as a self‑proclaimed political provocateur.
Kimbrew has a documented history of criminal cases tied to his time as a Compton school board member. In 2004, the Los Angeles Times reported he was charged with four felony counts of misusing public funds; the story also noted he had previously pleaded no contest to a felony charge for falsifying residency in a school board election.
Kimbrew’s recent election activism also led to his suspension from the NAACP. In an October 6, 2025, letter, national NAACP President Derrick Johnson stated: “The NAACP immediately suspends Kimbrew’s membership after he distributed a mass email urging California NAACP members to stop President Rick Callender, and included President Callender’s home address and cellphone, allegedly jeopardizing his safety and his family’s safety.”

A Santa Clara Superior Court judge has extended a restraining order until a new hearing on January 6, in a case involving allegations of electronic cyber harassment or doxxing connected to a recent NAACP leadership vote in California.
The coalition released statements from prominent activists condemning Kimbrew’s leadership:
“Basil Kimbrew has a long documented history of criminal activity. As a proud U.S. veteran who has served my country for over 25 years, to have someone like Kimbrew—twice convicted felon and alleged con man—in a position of trust is an embarrassment. He does not have the character or integrity to hold any leadership role in the Democratic Party. In an age of political violence, jeopardizing the life of Callender’s wife and family is a serious moral flaw. Rusty Hicks must remove Kimbrew immediately.” – Democratic Party activist Paullete Gibbons.
“I’ve known Rick Callender for years. Callender is a social justice warrior. The NAACP needs more leaders like Callender who hold people accountable. Kimbrew has always been a coward and has a long history of fraud and betrayal of the Black community. I completely understand why NAACP National President Derrick Johnson ousted Kimbrew from our organization,” activist Najee Ali said in a press release sent to EURweb.
Ali added: “It is important that Rusty Hicks and Democratic National Committee Chairman Ken Martin remove Kimbrew immediately from his position as chairman. Our party deserves better.”
