*Crypto mogul Joe McCann was not invited to his fiancée’s funeral on May 5, but weeks after being questioned by police in connection with her death, he is now speaking publicly about the loss for the first time.
McCann, 45, released a statement Tuesday mourning the April 9 death of Ashly Robinson — known to her followers as Ashlee Jenae — a 31-year-old New Jersey-based content creator who died during the couple’s vacation in Zanzibar. The two had gotten into a heated argument serious enough that hotel staff moved them into separate accommodations. McCann later told authorities that he and a security guard went to check on Robinson and discovered her unresponsive, having apparently hanged herself from a door.
“There are no adequate words to describe the total devastation, emptiness, and shock I feel after losing my best friend, confidante and fiancé,” McCann said, per the New York Post. “Ashly’s death is an incomprehensible tragedy.”
Local authorities ruled Robinson’s death a suicide. Although McCann had his travel documents seized and was detained for questioning during the investigation, police maintained he was brought in solely as a witness and no charges have been filed against him.

In his tribute, McCann painted a portrait of a woman devoted to the people she loved. “Ashly was an angel who shined her light on everyone fortunate enough to be in her presence,” he wrote, adding that she had a close bond with his children and that the two had shared plans to start a family together. “What Ashly desired most was to become a mother and to raise a family together. There is no question that she would have been an amazing mom.”
McCann was reportedly excluded from Robinson’s funeral service at Second Baptist Church in Paulsboro, New Jersey, though he expressed that he was “heartbroken” for her family.
Authorities have not released any new details on the progress of the investigation, and it is currently unknown whether McCann is still in Tanzania.
Robinson’s parents, Yolanda Endres and Harry Robinson, have rejected the suicide ruling and are pressing for a more thorough investigation into what truly happened to their daughter.
