*R&B star Amerie has confirmed the end of her 12-year marriage to Lenny Nicholson during an appearance on Way Up With Angela Yee.
When the host referred to her relationship as “locked in,” Amerie clarified, “I was, but not now.” She revealed that she and Nicholson have been separated since 2023 and are now navigating a divorce, ESSENCE reports.
“We’re going through the divorce, but we’ve been separated since 2023,” she stated. Amerie, 45, and Nicholson, her former manager, began dating in 2007 and tied the knot in 2011. They share a 7-year-old son, River Rowe.
“All the relationships that we have I believe we have them because we’re supposed to learn something, and so everything is a blessing.”
When asked about entering the dating scene, Amerie stated, “It’s been a couple of years since we’ve been separated, let’s be real.”

She emphasized the importance of finding a partner who uplifts, explaining, “One thing that’s important, too, is to remember you want to find someone that you can amplify, that amplifies you.”
“Because sometimes, and this is not necessarily my situation, but when I really started looking at it and I really started thinking about how people pair off and what that is,” she continued. “You can be with someone where you kind of stay the same. You can be with someone that can dim your light, and maybe you dim their light. You can be with someone who amplifies you and who you amplify.”
Whether Amerie chooses to pursue love again or focus on her own path, her words reflect resilience and clarity.
