*Rev. Al Sharpton is considering suing President Donald Trump for defamation after Trump falsely claimed Sharpton was paid to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 election.
On MSNBC’s Morning Joe, Sharpton denied the allegations, stating, “Well, absolutely not. And as the FEC filings say, they helped – the campaign gave funds for get-out-the-vote campaigns for National Action Network, of which I’m a part of, and other civil rights groups, some of which got more than National Action Network did. National Action Network, nor I, even endorsed her.”
He noted that his nonprofit’s lawyers are reviewing legal options, as Trump repeated the claim despite knowing no endorsement occurred. In a Truth Social post, Trump accused Sharpton, Oprah Winfrey, and Beyoncé of receiving payments for endorsements, calling Sharpton a “very low rated TV ‘anchor’” paid $600,000 for “doing, absolutely NOTHING!”
FEC filings show the Harris campaign donated two $250,000 sums to National Action Network for voter outreach, not endorsements. Sharpton called Trump’s accusations “race baiting,” linking them to his past birtherism attacks on Barack Obama.
Sharpton suggested Trump’s claims were a distraction from Jeffrey Epstein-related scrutiny, urging, “Release the Epstein files, Mr. Trump. Do what we did or be quiet.”
He argued Trump tried other failed distractions, like threatening to fire the Federal Reserve chief or pushing tariffs, before resorting to racial rhetoric. Sharpton said, “Then over the weekend, Kamala Harris, Oprah Winfrey, Beyoncé, Al Sharpton, the race card, or the thread here is race and that’s what he’s trying to do.”
The White House has not commented on Sharpton’s potential lawsuit.
