*Multi-award-winning voice actor and sound engineer Serah Johnson is the voice behind “Iyanu,” the heroine of the animated Cartoon Network and Max series. Based on the YouNeek Studios graphic novel published by Dark Horse Comics, Iyanu is a vibrant Afro-futuristic epic set in Yorubaland.
The teenage orphan discovers hidden divine powers and must fight to protect her world from an ancient evil. The series is rich in Yoruba mythology and African cultural symbolism, elements Johnson embraced wholeheartedly.
“It felt like a dream come true,” she told EURweb. “There was a lot of studying, a lot of channeling. I read all the comics, I researched her relationships and motivations, the voice came naturally once I understood her soul.”
That spirit has resonated far beyond the booth. Johnson recently made history as the first African to win Outstanding Narration – TV or Film at the Society of Voice Arts Awards, a moment she says represented more than just personal success.
“It felt like our voices were finally being heard,” she said. “Africa to the world.”

Her expertise extends beyond performance; Johnson also helps voice actors deliver broadcast-ready audio and stresses that high-quality sound isn’t about the fanciest mic. “People forget it’s about the room,” she explained. “A great mic will only amplify bad sound. Start by treating your space.”
As a multidisciplinary creative, she draws inspiration from everyday life. “You have to live to create. I paint, I shoot videos, I do pottery, even if I’m not great at it,” she laughed. “It all informs my artistry.”
When asked what superpower she’d want beyond storytelling, she stated. “Teleportation. Or reading minds. But really, storytelling already feels like a superpower.”
With Iyanu introducing African mythology to a new generation, Serah Johnson is more than just a voice; she’s aiming to be a global force redefining the sound of authentic storytelling.
