*Former President Barack Obama recently stressed the value of diverse friendships for men during a July 16 appearance on the podcast IMO with Michelle Obama & Craig Robinson.
Responding to a listener’s question about raising emotionally intelligent men, Obama highlighted the need for varied male role models. He recalled a gay college professor who profoundly influenced him, noting, “[He] became one of my favorite professors and was a great guy, and would call me out when I started saying stuff that was ignorant.”
Obama emphasized that such connections extend beyond role models to friendships. “By the way, you need that person in your friend group so that if you then have a boy who is gay or nonbinary, or what have you, they have somebody that they can go, ‘Okay, I’m not alone in this,’” he said. He described this inclusivity as vital for building community, calling it essential despite its “corny” sound.
His advocacy for inclusivity aligns with his legacy, including his support for the 2015 legalization of gay marriage before Obergefell v. Hodges and the 2010 repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. Obama also made history as the first U.S. president to appear on the cover of Out magazine in 2015.
A 2023 New York Post report resurfaced a 1982 letter from a 21-year-old Obama to his then-girlfriend Alex McNear, revealing his introspections on identity. “In regard to homosexuality, I must say that I believe this is an attempt to remove oneself from the present, a refusal perhaps to perpetuate the endless farce of earthly life. You see, I make love to men daily, but in the imagination,” he wrote.

Obama added, “My mind is androgynous to a great extent and I hope to make it more so until I can think in terms of people, not women as opposed to men.”
The letter, uncovered by biographer David Garrow for his book “Rising Star,” was transcribed by hand due to Emory University’s restrictions on photographing or removing it. Obama’s reflections, alongside his modern LGBTQ+ advocacy, underscore his call for empathy and openness in men’s social circles.
