*A coalition of African American community leaders and organizations in Los Angeles is demanding the immediate arrest and prosecution of a security guard involved in a brutal and unprovoked attack on Tejuana Johnson, a 34-year-old African American woman. The assault took place inside the Melody Bar and Grill, located near LAX, on the evening of Saturday, July 6.
The incident, which has garnered widespread outrage, was captured on video and has since gone viral across social media platforms.
In the footage, the security guard can be seen verbally abusing Johnson before forcibly removing her from the bar. The guard is then seen slamming Johnson onto the concrete ground and pepper spraying her.
“This security guard called me the B-word and then assaulted me. There’s no excuse to justify the sexist slurs, assault, and pepper spray that this security guard used against me. I’m suffering not just physically but the emotional trauma I’m undergoing is devastating,” Johnson, a graduate of Howard University, recounted.
“Black men are supposed to protect and defend Black women. Instead, this Black man violently attacked me in front of dozens of horrified witnesses. I want him arrested and prosecuted to the full extent of the law,” a disappointed Johnson expressed.
This incident is not isolated, as community activist Yolanda Davidson also shared her experience of mistreatment at the Melody Bar.
“I was previously physically assaulted by security at the Melody Bar. This bar has a long history of women being physically abused by their security. The Melody Bar ownership has never accepted any responsibility for the assaults on bar patrons by their security. That is disgraceful. Our community members should never patronize this business again,” Davidson stated.
In response to these alarming occurrences, LA activist Najee Ali has been retained by Johnson’s family to bring attention to the incident and advocate for justice.
A press conference is scheduled for tomorrow, Saturday, July 13th, at 6:00 PM Pacific Time, in front of the Melody Bar and Grill.
Additionally, Ali says he’s received 3 phone calls from other African American women who stated that they were physically abused by Melody Bar security and they sent documents that verified they contacted the owners of Melody Bar who never responded to the complaints.
“They all asked if they could participate in the press conference and protest I’m organizing outside Melody Bar. I told them that they along with anyone else that wanted to participate is welcome to join us,” adds Ali
The press conference aims to address the incident and call for immediate legal action against the security guard involved. Community leaders, activists, and members of the public are expected to gather in solidarity with Johnson and to decry the systemic issues that allow such incidents of violence and abuse to occur.
