*MJ, The Musical has hit the stage at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre with a bang for a limited run through January 28, 2024. Thanks to producers Lia Vollack, John Branca, John McClain, and Broadway in Hollywood, a magical night awaits. MJ, The Musical is based on the book by two-time Tony Award winner Lynn Nottage and stars Roman Banks as the imitable Michael Jackson.
Roman is electrifying as he reiterates the passion, the fire, and the magnitude of the late King of Pop. Roman’s performances are interwoven with other stellar performers who embody the MJ spirit at various ages and stages. Kudos are to Brandon Lee Harris as an earlier stage Michael and Josiah Benson, Ethan Joseph, and Jaylen Lyndon Hunter who also perform as younger versions of MJ.
MJ, The Musical is far from a linear experience. The textured narrative and production design immerse the audience into an MJ time capsule. Fans are thrust into MJ’s vortex where they are ever present in the genius mind of MJ as he flashes back on his pathway to fame, his intense childhood, and the complexities of his life as an eclectic taskmaster and global superstar.
The whole evening feels endowed by the celestial presence of the great MJ himself. Created by Tony Award®-winning Director/Choreographer Christopher Wheeldon, the choreography drives the story from one MJ hit to the next! Dancers float, slide, grind, and pump out every pulsating beat in perfect sync with MJ, reimagined by masterful storyteller Lynn Nottage. Nothing is lacking here, and the irrevocable contributions of the OG are evident with every actor, singer, and player who dares to slip on the sparkled glove, sing the notes, and make those famous moves, and we can’t get enough.
MJ’s power is juxtaposed with his mild manner and perfectionism. MJ, The Musical is a thriller for entertainment value alone, but the story is not remiss from addressing his long-rumored underlying financial woes and health concerns. Still, MJ maximizes every theatrical moment and musical climax, ending on a high note, worthy of the King himself.
