*Grammy-nominated British-Nigerian music producer MikeyMuzik, one half of the production duo Sons of Sonix, shared insights into his remarkable journey, passion for music, and vision for the future in an exclusive interview with EURweb.
Michael Akinkunmi, also known as MikeyMuzik, hails from Southeast London. Alongside his partner Moses Samuels, they’ve made a significant impact as record producers, songwriters, and engineers. Their journey has been marked by global success, leading them to work on music projects for top music artists such as Jennifer Lopez, Stormzy, and Justin Bieber, to name a few.
MikeyMuzik’s passion for music traces back to his upbringing in church, where he began playing drums at the age of five. Immersed in music throughout his younger years, he eventually decided to pursue it as a career at the age of 16. Alongside his business partner Moses Samuels, they formed the production duo Sons of Sonix, driven by a shared frustration with breaking into the music industry in the UK. Inspired by the success of their mentor Harmony Samuels, a renowned English producer based in LA (and Moses’ older brother), they ventured to Los Angeles, where they’ve collaborated with top artists like Ariana Grande, Ty Dolla $ign, and Trey Songz.
“At the ages of 11 till 16, it was just about perfecting the craft and making songs. I used to sing and write songs. I used to be in a boy choir as well. I was immersed in music and that’s all I knew. When I got to 16 I told myself I want to make this my career,” Mikey recalled.
Beyond his role in Sons of Sonix, MikeyMuzik also serves as a music A&R consultant for Africa with Peer Music, one of the world’s largest independent publishing companies. Additionally, he is the owner of 3Days Agency, a creative agency facilitating services in music, photography, and fashion.
Driven by a commitment to excellence and a desire to make a lasting impact, MikeyMuzik remains steadfast in his vision to return to Africa, particularly Nigeria. His transformative trip to Nigeria in 2019 ignited a sense of purpose, prompting him to ponder how he could leverage his musical talents to effect positive change and foster music opportunities in his native country. With a clear focus on the long game, MikeyMuzik aims to channel his passion and expertise into initiatives that uplift and empower the African music industry.
Reflecting on his favorite tracks, MikeyMuzik highlights a time when he created the song “A Moment,” by Riley. Made during the lockdown in 2020, and co-written along with Jordin Sparks, Blush, and Amber Riley. The song served as a tribute to Riley’s late friend and ‘Glee’ actress Naya Rivera, who passed away in July 2020.
“We wrote this record in a period of a moment,” said Mikey. “If you listen to the record she said ‘Lord knows I’m tired.’ We all try every single day to figure out this thing called life. The song was a hit because it hit every single person I sent it to.”
Offering advice to aspiring music producers, MikeyMuzik spoke on the significance of mastering the craft, learning the music business, and maintaining pure intentions. He emphasizes the importance of studying music and understanding its nuances to create timeless records.
“Master the craft,” said MikeyMuzik. “You have to sharpen your tools and learn everything that you need to know about making music; study music and listen to music. Listen to how it flows, how it works, the length, the frequency. Understand and embrace music because when you’re creating, all you’re doing is pulling from a vast library of tools that you’ve learned and studied.”

As he continues to make strides in his career, his passion for music remains unwavering, serving as a guide of inspiration for aspiring artists and producers worldwide.
