*On “Tamron Hall,” beloved actor Giancarlo Esposito stopped by to discuss his starring role in the AMC crime-thriller series “Parish,” his acclaimed career, family life, and more. During the conversation, Esposito reflected on his iconic role in AMC’s “Breaking Bad” and explained why he’s called “the master of intensity” on screen. “You know, I ask another question and I do it every day, ‘Am I a good man today?’ I ask myself ‘What is my intention?’ Not just for me. Am I looking out for myself or am I looking out for all of us? There is the ‘I’ and then there is the ‘We’ or the ‘Me,’ right? And I think the ‘me’ and the ‘us’, the ‘I’ and the ‘us’ is more important. The ‘we’ is more important so in this particular story, it’s an investigation into a part of my life that was really a sad part of my life that led me to start to pepper pieces of my life into this particular show and I think that’s why it has the depth that it does. With each character I play, I try to give myself an assignment, to find a way in. How can I really relate to some of these circumstances?” On the real-life circumstances that affected how he played this role, “For this character, there was a time in my life when I was bankrupt, losing my house, losing my marriage, not identifying with people who wanted to help me, thinking I could do it all on my own, everything was failing, what is my way out? I was 45, 50 years old. For me, I had four children and how can I help them survive and have a good life so the feeling that Gracien Parish, Gray Parish, in this is feeling that he is not a man because he’s not able to provide and then he’s not present because he’s lost a son so he’s in deep traumatic turmoil. He’s actually depressed and he is unable to relate to his wife or the child he has left because he hasn’t solved the murder, the murder has not been solved of his son.”

“It was special because the writing was really stellar. It was excellent writing but for me, I wanted to stop playing stereotypes a long time ago and so my questions for Vince Gilligan [creator of “Breaking Bad”] were, ‘What do you see this guy as?’ I didn’t want to play a guy who’s a stereotypical criminal mastermind. I wanted to play someone who’s a human being. I believe human beings are light and dark and sometimes we exist in the gray area. It depends on what your intention is and my intention for playing Gustavo Fring was to be a human being who fell from grace because he didn’t get what he wanted and then started a force and imposed himself on all the rest of us and I recognize that for me, I have some control issues. I want to control how it goes and sometimes we can’t control how it goes. My daughters have taught me, my family has taught me, people I work with have taught me that the more I’m collaborative, the better it is. But then you have to trust! If you don’t trust that someone can do a collaboration with you and if you don’t listen to criticism or suggestions, then you’re your own island and you think you know better.” On being called the “master of intensity,” he said, “I think it really relates to how I focus my energy. We are what we think. We are what we do. Love is action so if I’m really focusing my energy in the right place and being completely present, that sometimes appears to people as being intense but to me, it appears to me as being connected.”

“It’s nerve-wracking! It’s crazy, that’s insane not going to lie. You’re making it super surreal, I don’t know why! You are making me feel the pressure! I think it’s just crazy. I think what you said, I think about just being so young, I’m 26 right now, but I’ve been singing since I was seven. I did ‘The Voice’ when I was 16 so I think for me, it’s just accomplishing so much at a young age, it just sets the bar that much higher for yourself and I just try to not psych myself out and always be like ‘You know what? This is my purpose, this is my journey.’ I’m flowing but the pressure is there because you always just want to grow and be great.”
