Wait. What?! Nigerian Female Pastor Preaches Wigs Over Natural Hair for Single Women Looking for Husbands | WATCH

*The debate over natural hair vs unnatural hair (wigs) has reached a holy level, thanks to a recent sermon given by a Nigerian female pastor.

Referencing a viral video, Madame Noire reports the pastor caught the wrath of Instagram users for telling single women in her congregation to wear wigs to get a husband instead of their natural hair.

Since it was posted, the clip has received thousands of comments on Instagram and become a trending topic of discussion on the Nigeria-based 24-hour broadcasting channel TVC.

Commenters reacting to @its_onsite’s repost of the video had no problem blasting the pastor with personal attacks for berating women rocking their natural hair as well as accusing her of bleaching her skin.

Others even went so far as to wonder what the preacher’s comments have to do with the word of God.

“She could’ve kept this to herself lol! The colonizers did a number on Africa too,” one person said.

“And that wig ain’t go keep your husband!! Y’all don’t let this lady lead y’all astray,” another user chimed in.

Critics of the Nigerian preacher’s views on hair are many. Among those disputing the pastor is Nigerian entertainer Simi. Taking to X (formerly known as Twitter), the former gospel singer made her opposition known as she characterized the pastor’s rhetoric as “self-hate.”

“Even when you hide self-hate inside ‘good advice,’ it’s still self-hate,” Simi posted on Oct. 31. “This is why 90% of skincare products in countries full of beautiful dark skin girls/women are ‘whitening creams.’ And girls are told that the hair that grows out of their hair is not special enough. It’s not that you’re not good enough, it’s that they said you’re not good enough. She’s on the pulpit too. A role model. Lol…”

“Church girls who want husbands don’t have to adhere to Western ideals of beauty to get them,” Simi added. “Women shouldn’t be shamed for how they choose to present themselves — especially from other women and especially at church… Whether in wigs or without.”

Realistically speaking, social media users came with other thoughts on the pastor’s sermon, including the following:

“You can have natural hair, braids, a shortcut, or wig — they still gonna cheat on y’all… and what this gotta do with the lord lol?”

“This what they talk about in church these days?”

“THEY PREACHING SELF HATRED.”

“What this got to do wit the word smh? Making a mockery outta church smh.”

On the other side, one user came to the pastor’s defense with a breakdown of the purpose behind her controversial message.

“Y’all missing the message,” the user said. “She’s saying keep yourself looking good and up to par, basically. Act like you give a damn about your appearance.” That said, a more extended sermon clip provided more context around the female preacher’s message.

Explaining her hair stance, the Nigerian preacher referenced Proverbs 18:24 (“A man that has friends must show himself friendly.”). From there, Madame Noire noted how the pastor encouraged her listeners to be social after beautifying themselves with wigs and makeup.

“Show yourself friendly, and then you will have friends,” the pastor said as she suggested that wigs would bring “the church girls more male attention.” To hit further home with her point, the preacher stressed that a prayer warrior wearing natural hair would not find much success in her search for a husband.

“All of you with natural hair — you better wear your wig and be [tossing your hair],” the pastor said before tossing the hair from the long, auburn straight wig she had on.

Once women obtain their chosen guy via marriage, the preacher said that is the point where ladies can indulge in their natural hair. Otherwise, “Spend that money on hair, draw on your eyebrows, buy lip gloss — look good.”

“Package yourself well,” the pastor said before seemingly speaking in tongues. “There’s a time for everything… In the evening, when he wants to take you out, say, ‘I’m available.’”

“Truly and truly, these are the issues,” she continued. This is why sometimes men will leave church and bring a Jezebel. Because all the sisters are unavailable — [they’re] always busy in prayer meetings or fasting.”
