*The legacy of legendary trumpeter Roy Hargrove is celebrated with the release of “The Love Suite: In Mahogany,” a never-before-heard, one-time live performance now available on all digital streaming platforms.

Hargrove, who passed away in 2018 at age 49, was considered “not simply one of the most dazzling jazz talents of his generation” but also “a visionary who worked to fully integrate jazz, hip-hop, and R&B,”  per Pitchfork, according to a news release.

“Unlike his genre-bending forbearer, the brooding Prince of Darkness Miles Davis, Hargrove possessed a lightness of spirit that permeated every note he played,” says Pitchfork. “The late trumpeter’s innovative work with D’Angelo, Erykah Badu, Common, and the RH Factor helped shape the modern musical landscape as we know it.”

The Jazz at Lincoln Center (JALC) and the organization’s in-house recording label Blue Engine Records is celebrating the late musician through archives and a new animated video showcasing Hargrove’s 2016 interview with Honolulu, Hawaii radio host Dave Lawrence.

JALC and Blue Engine Records marked Hargrove’s birthday in October with a special concert and dinner at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club in New York City.

The exclusive event featured a performance by the Roy Hargrove Big Band and coincided with the release of a posthumous live album, “The Love Suite: In Mahogany, Live at Jazz at Lincoln Center.” A private listening session was held for Roy’s mother, Jacklyn Hargrove, and it was the first time she had heard the recording since 1993, when she attended the performance at Alice Tully Hall, per the news release.

Roy acknowledges his mother from the stage “On The Love Suite: In Mahogany, Live at Jazz at Lincoln Center.”

“Roy was so happy during this performance,” his mother recalled, according to the news release. “He was always so happy, but at this moment, he was on top of the world.”

Roy’s wife, Aida Brandes Hargrove, joined the Roy Hargrove Big Band during the birthday celebration to conduct the two songs from the live album.
