Ringside Update/ Davis vs Garcia: The Epilogue

YouTube video

*The much-anticipated showdown between Gervonta ‘Tank” Davis and “King” Ryan Garcia went down last weekend in Las Vegas in front of a sold-out crowd of some 20,000 plus at the T-Mobile Arena. And in case some of you might have missed it, in this writer’s opinion it really didn’t turn out to be as dramatic as I assumed it would be. Oscar De La Hoya and the folks at Golden Boy put a whole lot into building up “King” Ryan like he was the second coming of Christ. But after “Tank” hit him with a devastating body shot to the ribs in the seventh he went down in a fizzle.

And now the boxing world is labeling “Tank” as the KING of the lightweight division and totally ignoring the fact that there is an undisputed champion whose name is Devin Haney. And just in case some of you might not know, Haney holds all four of the sanctioning belts and is ranked just ahead of Davis on the pound-per-pound list at number nine while Davis is number ten. It seems to me that for some reason they don’t want to give Haney the credit he deserves maybe that will all change after May 20 when he goes against Vasyl Lomanchenko at the MGM Grand Arena.

The lightweight division is loaded with top-notch talent and among the names listed is Shakur Stevenson whom everyone is anticipating to see how he is matched up against the likes of Garcia, Haney, Davis, or Kambosos. Folks, it should be very interesting to say the least to see who comes out on top.

And by the way, Davis vs Garcia didn’t do too bad at the box office with $22.8 million bucks collected and I hear that the PPV garnered 1.2 million buys and that says a lot about how much they put into promoting this event.

In other boxing news, we lost another boxing great last week “King” Arthur Williams returned to God at the age of 58. He was the former IBF cruiserweight champ and fought the likes of Dwight Muhammad Qawi, Imamu Mayfield, Orlin Norris, and Chris Byrd. He was a very good fighter with a very impressive ring record of 47-17-1 with 30 coming by way of knockout. May Allah bless him with peace in paradise.

We’re all looking forward to the big lightweight championship showdown on May 20 as Devin “The Dream” Haney will put all four of his title belts on the line as he goes against Vasyl Lomanchenko at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas as I always say, we’ll see what happens.
