Watch Official Trailer for ‘The Book of Clarence’ Starring LaKeith Stanfield

*Sony Pictures has released the official trailer for the upcoming biblical feature “The Book of Clarence” starring LaKeith Stanfield.

The project hails from Jeymes Samuel (The Harder They Fall) and follows Stanfield as a “Streetwise but down-on-his-luck Clarence, who is struggling to find a better life for his family, while fighting to free himself of debt,” per the official synopsis. “Captivated by the power and glory of the rising Messiah and His apostles, he risks everything to carve his own path to a divine life, and ultimately discovers that the redemptive power of belief may be his only way out.”

Stanfield stars alongside Omar Sy, Anna Diop, RJ Cyler, David Oyelowo, Micheal Ward, Alfre Woodard, Teyana Taylor, Caleb McLaughlin, Eric Kofi-Abrefa and Marianne Jean-Baptiste, with James McAvoy and Benedict Cumberbatch.

“The Book of Clarence” features new music from Samuel, JAY-Z, Lil Wayne, Kid Cudi and more.

THE BOOK OF CLARENCE

“The Book of Clarence is a film that I wanted to make for many years. While I was working on The Harder They Fall and all my other projects, the story and the music for The Book of Clarence was always there percolating in my mind,” said Samuel.

“There was never a question as to whether I would compose the score and write and perform on the soundtrack, as well as write and direct the movie – it was all one amazing journey where one depended on the other. But I also worked with the most awesome artists on our track “Hallelujah Heaven”. Collaborating with Lil’ Wayne, Buju Banton and Shabba Ranks was so dope, I loved getting them all on the same track,” he shared.

Speaking to Vanity Fair, Samuel described Clarence as “a person that doesn’t believe in anything outside of what’s in front of him, what he can see and hear.”

“Clarence has a lot of inside belief—he has a lot of inside confidence. This man is sure he could fly. He reminds me of me growing up, but unlike me, he has no outside faith. I think it’s just a really interesting vantage point to explore living in that particular time and place, where most everyone around him is speaking about the Messiah,” Samuel continued.

He called Clarence’s journey one “of self-belief and world discovery.”

“I always wanted to explore the Bible stories, but from the angle of the person that sells Jesus his sandals, the woman or man that owns the hair salon,” the musician and filmmaker explained.

“The Book of Clarence” debuts in theaters on Jan. 12, 2024. Watch the new trailer via the YouTube clip above.
