*“Story Ave” is a new film produced by Jamie Foxx and stars Asante Blackk (“When They See Us”) as Kadir, a South Bronx teen, who tries to rob Luis Guzmán who plays an MTA conductor.
Guzmán, a celebrated actor with a staggering 150 feature film and television roles to his name, including Netflix’s “Wednesday” and Starz’s “High Town,” not only graces the screen in this production but also serves as an executive producer. In an interview, Guzmán recently shared insights about the journey to bring this project to screen.
“I thought the whole premise of it was great. I thought it was number one; very well written. It captured my imagination.
He added: “Usually, it takes me three or four days to read the script. But I read the script in one sitting; it blew me away.”
He further revealed that the film had no funding initially, and he was told it wouldn’t get made. However, Guzmán’s unwavering belief in the project drove him to action.
“No, no, no, I’m doing this movie. And I’m going to find the funding for it. That’s how much I believe,” he emphasized. Guzmán and his son assembled a team of investors to make the film a reality, showcasing their commitment to the project.
“It’s a beautiful story. We lose so many people to violence. And to be a part of the story that highlights trying to find that external family. For him to come across me the way he did (in the film), I had my own issues. And we helped each other. Here I am as this character, cooking for this kid. I’m giving him art supplies and stuff because I care. It was something genuine to me. But it also allowed the opportunity to give back a little.
This was Guzmán’s first time finding funding for a film. He said not many opportunities cross his path like this. And these are the type of films he wants to make.
The cast also features Alex R. Hibbert (“Moonlight”), Cassandra Freeman (“Bel-Air”), Coral Peña (“For All Mankind”), and Melvin Gregg (“The Blackening”).
“Story Ave” starring Luis Guzmán is currently in select New York theaters and opens in Los Angeles on Friday (10-13-23). For more details click here.
