*A mob of teenagers randomly attacked Howard University students over the weekend, prompting the HBCU to expand security on campus.

Four students were assaulted near the Howard Plaza Towers Apartments, according to a police report, per ABC 7.  One person was stabbed in the incident, the Metropolitan Police Department said.

Howard University intends to install more cameras and an armed officer outside the Plaza Towers. The university is also upping the police presence, according to Howard University President Dr. Wayne Frederick.

“We upped that presence as of last night – late hours, into wee hours of the morning. We also have added patrols where we believe students will have a lot of foot traffic as well. So our presence has been well deployed as of last evening,” Frederick told 7 News Wednesday.

“One of the challenges we do have is the campus is open. So the streets that run through campus are actually public streets,” he added.

The university is working with the Metropolitan Police Department amid an uptick in crime in D.C. and other urban areas.

“As far as I’m concerned, they have a significant safety crisis on their hands right now, and I’m sure their resources are going to be limited, so the expectation they could put a lot of resources around our campus, I think we have to be realistic,” Frederick said.

During the recent assault on campus, students were chased around residence halls by teenage boys who fought with them, WTOP reports.

Apparently, Howard security did not take appropriate action, as one witness posted on TikTok that her classmate was “left to die.”

One university officer was suspended due to the handling of the violence and an investigation has been launched.

“We certainly apologize that some of the reaction wasn’t the best of what we would expect, but we feel that we’ve taken action,” Frederick said.
