*Fixins Soul Kitchen, the full-service soul food restaurant that celebrates African American culture and traditions founded by Kevin Johnson, former NBA player and 55th mayor of Sacramento, announced their next location in Detroit opening mid-December.

The announcement featured a press conference with Kevin Johnson, who was joined by Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, Detroit City Councilperson for District 5 Mary Sheffield, actor and Senate-hopeful Hill Harper, media host and entrepreneur Angela Yee, landlord Rainy Hamilton Jr. and a small number of guests from Detroit’s business community at the restaurant’s future location in the Paradise Valley neighborhood.

The ceremony kicked off with celebratory remarks, commending the power of small businesses and investing in our communities. Speakers praised Kevin as a source of inspiration as a politician, an activist, and now a small business owner. During the ceremony, Hill Harper stated:

“When I think about the power of small businesses and communities, this (Fixins) is exactly what we need.” Anglea Yee also said, “It’s wonderful to see Kevin Johnson who’s had such a successful career in the NBA and as the Mayor of Sacramento, invest in historically Black communities, such as bringing Fixins to Paradise Valley.”

Fixins Detroit will be located at 1435 Randolph St, in the Paradise Valley neighborhood, the area that was once a booming business district and entertainment center in the 1920s through the 1950s, and home to the popular and thriving Black residential neighborhood known as Black Bottom. The restaurant will be 8,400 square feet with a total of 325 seats.

Fixins Soul Kitchen was founded in 2019 by former NBA All-Star and Mayor of Sacramento Kevin Johnson “KJ” and his wife Michelle, combining his love of Black culture with her obsession with great food. The restaurant pays homage to the soul food KJ grew up with and includes family-favorite recipes on the menu and other delicious made-from-scratch dishes like the signature chicken and waffles, oxtails, shrimp & grits, and deep-fried deviled eggs.
