“Fans of “Video Soul” icon Donnie Simpson may be surprised to know that he has a fraternal twin brother named Lonnie SimpsonThroughout the years, Donnie has given his brother a shout publicly and on social media.

The brothers are complete opposites when it comes to their chosen careers. Donnie is a television media/broadcast radio legend, while Lonnie Simpson is a longtime preacher, according to I Love Old School Music

“My twin brother Lonnie is the greatest person I have ever met! Any situation he faces gives him one way to react. That book [the Bible] gives my brother the preacher the answer,” Donnie Simpson once said, according to ILOSM.

Fans of Donnie who follow him on social media know that he tends to celebrate his and Lonnie’s January birthdays on Instagram. This year he shared a photo of them together and captioned it: “I swear it seems like I just celebrated my birthday a month ago. It’s amazing how fast they come now. It’s like when they try to show the passage of time in movies by having the gentle wind blow the pages of a day calendar. That wind is now a hurricane.”

The caption continued, “I’m so blessed to pass these years with the guy I came into this joint with though. Although I’m 53 minutes and 6 seconds older than my twin brother, it’s him who lights the way for me. I thank God for him, his heart and his grace. Happy Birthday Lonnie!!”

In a birthday tribute posted in January 2020, Donnie gushed about his bond with Lonnie, writing: “Happy Birthday to the richest man I know. My twin brother, Lonnie.I thank God for you. He knew from the beginning who I needed to ride shotgun with me through life. He knew how much I’d Love you long before I did. Not “Won’t he do it”, but “Didn’t he do it”. Happy Birthday Bruh Lon!!”

Donnie Simpson, known for his sultry voice, warm smile, and piercing green eyes, began his radio career at 15 with WJLB in Detroit, Mich. He relocated to Washington, D.C., where he began working at WRC-TV. Soon after he hosted “Video Soul,” a defining music video show on BET.

We caught up with Donnie in 2016 and reflected on his illustrious career in radio. At the time he shared which celebrity was on his bucket list but he never got the chance to interview the legendary star before his sudden death.

“I never got to interview Michael,” he told us.

“I always wanted to interview Michael Jackson, and I knew Michael. I hung out with Michael on numerous occasions, but I never had him as a guest on the show,” Donnie continued. “So for many years, the only two artists on that list were Michael and Prince. I did get to talk to Prince on radio, not on Video Soul, because he didn’t do interviews for along time. I remember the only interview Prince had done was an interview where he interview himself, which was great.”
