*DJ Kool Herc, a Jamaican who is considered the godfather of hip-hop, will be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and presented with the Musical Influence Award, EUR previously reported.
The 2023 class of inductees also includes Kate Bush, Sheryl Crow, Missy Elliott, George Michael, Willie Nelson, Rage Against the Machine, and The Spinners, CNN reports. Link Wray is also a recipient of the Musical Influence Award, while Chaka Khan, Al Kooper, and Bernie Taupin have been selected to receive the Musical Excellence Award.
This year’s Ahmet Ertegun Award recipient is Don Cornelius.

The induction ceremony will go down on November 3, at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The Rock Hall induction will make Herc the third Jamaican to receive the honor, following Bob Marley and Jimmy Cliff in 1994 and 2010, respectively.
As CNN reports, the Musical Influence Award goes to “artists whose music and performance style have directly influenced, inspired, and evolved rock & roll and music impacting youth culture” while the Musical Excellence Award is “given to artists, musicians, songwriters, and producers whose originality and influence creating music have had a dramatic impact on music.”
The Ahmet Ertegun Award goes to “non-performing industry professionals who have had a major influence on the creative development and growth of rock & roll and music that has impacted youth culture.”
Last August, Kool Herc hit up Instagram to explain how he created the hip-hop genre.
According to New York Carib News, the post states, “On August 11, 1973, Kool Herc hosted a back-to-school party held on for his sister Cindy in the recreation room of their building at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue. This is widely celebrated as the birth of Hip-Hop culture. Herc preferred the more obscure ‘album cuts’ which he would isolate the percussive breakdown parts from and repeat them on two turntables.”
