*Deion Sanders has been labeled a “sellout” for leaving HBCU Jackson State to coach at the University of Colorado. Now that he’s leaving, the haters are saying, “see, we told ya. He’s nothing but a traitor who thinks the white man’s ice is colder.”

The former NFLer was officially announced as Colorado’s next head coach on Sunday, Yahoo reports.

It ain’t gonna be no more of a mess that these wonderful fans, the student body and some of your parents have put up with for probably two decades now. I’m coming, and when I get here, it’s gonna be changed,” Sanders told the Colorado football players upon his arrival to Boulder.

“So I want y’all to get ready to go ahead and jump in the portal and do whatever you’re gonna get because if more of you jump in, the more room you make,” he continued. Watch the moment via the Twitter clip below.

“This is pathetic – I went from admiration to disappointment- this is no way to talk to student athletes who have given more to that university than sanders dreamed – just pathetic,” said one Twitter user in response to Deion’s speech to the players.

“Prime acting for the cameras per usual … bro couldn’t find a legit job anywhere,” tweeted another user.

A third said, “He hasn’t won a single FBS game as a head coach and he rolled in there talking like Saban! Pump the brakes Prime. Might be a good idea to earn the respect of the players before you start dissing and being condescending to kids who’ve invested in that program.”

One Sanders supporter tweeted, “He’s the Head Coach there now. His culture will be what he wants it to be. If the players don’t fit then they can take their ass somewhere else. It’s not his job to cater to their feelings. He’s paid to win football games and he won’t do that with soft players.”

Sanders’ son Shedeur, current quarterback for Jackson State, will be leading the Colorado team next fall. Watch the announcement via the Twitter clip below.

Meanwhile, USA Today reporter Mike Freeman has reacted to criticism from Black sports fans that Sanders is a sellout for leaving an HBCU to coach for Colorado. He writes:

This is the truth about Sanders: He isn’t a traitor to Black people. He isn’t necessarily a savior for Colorado, either. He is, quite simply, what every other big-time college coach is: a capitalist.

It is absurd, borderline antebellum, to expect Sanders to stay at Jackson State because he’s Black and the school is an HBCU. HBCUs are the intellectual and moral pulse of the Black community and have been for over a century. They are cherished, but Sanders himself shouldn’t feel indebted to Jackson State. He’s not a sellout for leaving.
