*Chaka Khan was once forced to cough up some money in a wrongful death lawsuit involving the singer’s son.

As I Love Old School Music reports, Chaka’s son Damien Holland was 25 years old when he allegedly accidentally killed his friend, Christopher Bailey, 17, in 2004.

Bailey was staying at the home Holland shared at the time with his mother, his girlfriend, and his young daughter. Holland reportedly shot Bailey in the face with an M-16 assault rifle as the two sparred over an affair the victim claimed to have had with Holland’s girlfriend. Damian was ultimately charged with murder.

“It was like something out of a nightmare,” Khan testified during the 2016 trial.

According to TODAY, Khan said the victim “could have survived the shooting had police permitted emergency medical workers to enter her home sooner,” the outlet writes.

Per ILOSM, Holland reportedly told his attorneys that he lied about the gun going off during a struggle with Bailey. “Holland also said he persuaded friends to lie to the police and had a friend punch him in the face to make it appear he had fought with Bailey,” the outlet writes.

“I didn’t see any way out of the situation,” Holland reportedly said. “I felt terrible.”

Damien was ultimately acquitted of all charges after the jury heard testimony from his mother and other close friends and relatives.

Khan and many of the witnesses are suspected of lying during the trial about the circumstances surrounding Bailey’s death, The DailyBreeze reported.

Christopher’s parents ultimately filed and won a $1.3 million wrongful death lawsuit against Chaka as well as her son and Chaka’s mother, according to ILOSM.
