“jeen-yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy” is an epochal journey reel highlighting Kanye West captured by directors Clarence “Coodie” Simmons and Chike Ozah.
We spoke to the duo about the revealing Netflix documentary of West’s experience, through his formative days trying to break into rap and his life today as an international icon.
Q: When you were going through all of your archives what clip surprised you the most?
CS: The clip with Donda (West) saying, ‘Kanye I have something important to talk to you about.’ I discovered that before we started working on this documentary. When I was licensing footage for “Hip Hop: The Songs That Shook America” I saw it. She said, ‘Kanye you come off a bit arrogant.’ And he was like, ‘you think so?’ And she said, ‘a giant looks in the mirror and sees nothing.’ So I uploaded the footage and emailed it to Kanye. I said, ‘your mother told me to send this to you.’ That was a most shocking because I did her funeral presentation and I don’t remember seeing that clip.
Q: You’d have to be living off the grid not to notice the main character of your documentary has been popping up on our news feeds for a few weeks – is all publicity good publicity?
CS: I’ve never thought all publicity is good publicity. Some people say it is because you can become more popular and people will want to see more. But some things just aren’t good.
Q:You were following Kanye with a camera for decades, how has he changed or stayed the same?
CO: His passion. In the documentary Pharrell (Williams) give Kanye some advice right after he spits “Through the Wire.” He says, ‘keep that hunger!’ And that’s one thing that’s transcended from music to fashion and everything Kanye embarks on. In making this new album there’s a hunger there like when he made his first album.
CS: When I see him in the media I see a different side. But when I’m with him it’s the same Kanye that I’ve grown to love.
“jeen-yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy” will release globally on Netflix on Feb 16 with Act I: Vision dropping first, than Act II: Purpose, followed by Act III: Awakening.
