NAN LA Protesters Honor Civil Rights Leader John Lewis and Demand Passing of Police Accountability Laws

NAN LA - protest-march

*Los Angeles – Several organizations including National Action Network Los Angeles, The Baptist Ministers Conference and The NAACP, will come together at 10 a.m. on Saturday July 18, 2020 to march and then hold a news conference in front of the Wallis Annenberg Building, located at 3737 S Figueroa St, Los Angeles, CA 90007.

The purpose of the march and press conference is to demand that our elected officials push legislation that will increase police accountability in the state of California.

The recent and tragic deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Andres Guardado have once again highlighted the systemic racism within the criminal justice system. Since then millions of people, of all races, have poured into the streets demanding justice for the lives that were lost and millions more are seeking lasting solutions that will ensure we will not be here next year – yet again.

“Passing legislation that holds police officers accountable for their actions is a sustainable solution that will help to address the systemic issues within the current policing system in America” states Rasheda Kilpatrick, the policy director of National Action Network Los Angeles.

“We praise our elected officials for their past efforts to pass laws that increase police accountability, such as raising the legal standard for peace officers’ use of deadly force, however more work must be done” states Lori Condinus, NAN member.

The proposed bills the organizations are demanding to be introduced are:

Ø  Mandatory independent prosecutor for officer-involved death cases

Ø  Mandatory independent investigator for officer-involved death cases

Ø  Ban the Use of the Choke Hold (Support AB 1196)

Ø  Limit Officers’ Qualified Immunity

The march will start at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church of Los Angeles and end at the Wallis Annenberg Building.   The press conference will be held on the front stairs of the Wallis Annenberg Building where both Senator Holly Mitchell and Assemblymember Reginald Jones-Sawyer have offices.  Both have been invited to attend and receive the proposed bills.
