*ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) hosted the 11th annual ASCAP “Women Behind the Music” event at Bardot in Los Angeles. Every year at the event the organization recognizes female songwriters, artists, publishers, executives in all facets of the entertainment business.

“I actually created this event 10 years ago so I’m very proud of how it’s grown and developed. It’s amazing to see,” said Nicole George-Middleton, Senior Vice President of Membership, Rhythm and Soul, ASCAP. “The beauty of it is that there are so many amazing women. We get together as a team and we pick from a long list but I’m just happy that we have a long list to choose from. That’s why we have this event so we can celebrate those women and shine a light on them because it doesn’t often happen.”

This year, the coveted honor went to artist/songwriter Victoria Monét (Ariana Grande, Mary J. Blige, Chris Brown), Roc Nation Co-President Shari Bryant and Capitol Records Vice President of Artist Relations Britney Davis, who has worked with artists such as Lil Baby, City Girls, Queen Naija, QCs Control and Chris Brown.

“It’s been a great year for black excellence. I’m just happy to able to be recognized amongst my peers. We’ve been riding together. It’s like we started as assistants together and now I’m able to call and make deals and make magic happen,” said Davis. “We have that sisterhood and solidarity. I’ve known Shari forever and Victoria, I’ve been in sessions with so it’s like a sense of community.”

“I’m really appreciative of all of these opportunities to just smell the roses while I can,” said Monét. “ASCAP was the first company I ever signed up for in the music industry so it’s like a full circle situation.”

Previous ASCAP “Women Behind the Music” honorees have included: hip-hop legends Salt-N-Pepa, musician/singer Sheila E., Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Jazmine Sullivan, songwriter/artist Priscilla Renea, actress and Sister Circle co-host Rashan Ali, singer-songwriter Sevyn Streeter, and prominent music executive and author Shanti Das among others.
